Aqua #00FFFF

Aqua is the hex color #00FFFF, made from full-strength green and blue light with no red at all. It is extremely bright, cool, and fully saturated. Its name is simply Latin for water. On screen it looks like a lit swimming pool or a neon sign, and it was all over early web graphics.

In CSS, aqua and cyan are the same color, #00FFFF. Outside the web, 'aqua' is often used loosely for softer blue-greens, so paint or fabric sold as aqua is usually paler and less intense.

Aqua color meaning

Most of the time aqua is used to say one thing: water. Bottled water, pool supplies, and cleaning products lean on it because it signals clean and wet before anyone reads the label.

At full strength it also carries a digital feel. #00FFFF is one of the sixteen basic colors in the original HTML palette, and its intensity made it a regular on early websites, screensavers, and 1990s graphics. That history gives pure aqua a retro-tech edge, which is why it turns up in Y2K-style design.

Toned-down aquas read as calm and refreshing, the sort of color used in spas and bathrooms. The saturated screen version is louder. It grabs attention far better than it soothes, so the meaning depends a lot on how much of it you use and how pale you make it.

How to use Aqua in design

Use #00FFFF in small doses. It is bright enough to vibrate against saturated reds and magentas, and as a large background it strains the eyes. Black or very dark navy text sits well on it, while white text is nearly unreadable. On dark interfaces, aqua makes a sharp highlight for links, chart lines, or a glowing logo mark.

Expect a shift in print. Standard process inks cannot reach this screen value, so aqua looks duller on paper. Brands that need one color across screen and print usually settle on a slightly muted aqua.

Aqua FAQ

Is aqua the same as turquoise?

No. Aqua (#00FFFF) is pure cyan light with no red, so it is brighter and more electric. Turquoise (#40E0D0) has a little red mixed in and slightly less green, which makes it softer and closer to the color of the gemstone. Side by side, turquoise looks calmer and aqua looks almost fluorescent.

Is aqua a warm or cool color?

Aqua is a cool color. It sits between green and blue on the color wheel, directly opposite red, with no warm component in its mix. It looks coldest beside oranges and reds, and you can warm a palette around it by adding coral, peach, or sand.
