Color names FAQ

How many named colors are there?

There is no fixed number. CSS defines 148 color keywords that every browser understands, and paint, fashion and design brands name thousands more. This list covers common names used in design, fashion and paint, each with one hex value you can copy.

What is a hex color code?

A hex code is a six-digit code that tells a screen how much red, green and blue to mix. Each pair of digits runs from 00 to FF, which is 0 to 255. #FF0000 is full red with no green or blue. Every design tool and browser accepts hex codes.

Why do some colors share a hex code?

Some names are synonyms. In CSS, magenta and fuchsia are both #FF00FF, and aqua and cyan are both #00FFFF. Other names, such as sage green or dusty rose, have no official value, so this list uses a common one and says so on that color’s page.
