The 40 best Google Fonts

These are 40 Google Fonts that cover most design jobs, from interface text to magazine headlines to code. Every font here is free, open licensed and served by Google Fonts, so you can use it on a website, in an app or in a print project without paying a fee.

The numbers show list order, not a quality score. Each entry shows the font set in itself, how many weights and italics it has, and a link to its own page with a type tester, facts, an embed snippet and pairing ideas.

Body textmarks fonts that read well in paragraphs at normal sizes. Fonts without the marker are better in headings, logos and short lines.

Google Fonts FAQ

How do I pair these fonts?

Pick one font for headings and one for body text, and make them different enough to tell apart: a serif with a sans serif, or a wide face with a narrow one. Keep to two families per page. Our Google font pairings page shows ten tested sets with live samples and the CSS to copy.

Are Google Fonts free for commercial use?

Yes. Every font on this list is released under the SIL Open Font License. Google also publishes fonts under the Apache License 2.0. Both let you use the fonts in commercial work, including websites, apps, products and print. You can't sell the font files on their own, and a modified copy can't reuse the original font name. Read the licence file inside each download for the exact terms.

Can I use them in print and in Photoshop or other desktop apps?

Yes. Download the family from the Google Fonts page for that font, unzip it and install the files on your computer. After that the font shows up in Photoshop, Illustrator, Word, Figma and similar apps, and the open licences cover print. Variable fonts install as a single file with a weight slider. Recent versions of Adobe apps handle them, while older apps may show only the default weight.

Should I self-host or use the Google Fonts API?

The API is the quickest option: you add one link tag, Google serves the right file for each browser and sends only the character ranges a page needs. Self-hosting means downloading the font files and serving them from your own domain. That removes a third-party connection, gives you control over caching and keeps visitor IP addresses away from Google. Browsers no longer share a font cache between sites, so the old speed advantage of the shared Google cache is gone. Either works if you load only the weights you use and set font-display to swap.

What is the difference between Source Sans 3 and Source Sans Pro?

They are the same family. Adobe renamed Source Sans Pro to Source Sans 3 and Source Serif Pro to Source Serif 4 when the designs were updated, and Google Fonts uses the new names. Search for the new names when you embed them.

Where can I find other good fonts?

Google Fonts lists close to two thousand families, and you can filter by category, language and number of styles. Good ones outside this list include Nunito, Ubuntu, Josefin Sans, Hind, Bitter and Cabin, which appear on our pairings pages. Choose a few and test them with your own text before you commit.

These are Google Fonts, made by the designers named on each page and published free under an open licence. Zaps lists them, and downloads come from Google Fonts.
